1750 (undated) 12.5 x 15.5 in (31.75 x 39.37 cm)
Description
This is an unusual c. 1750 panoramic view of Rome as seen from the bell tower of the Senatorial Palace or Palazzo Senatorio on the Capitoline Hill. 191 buildings throughout Rome are illustrated as they would be viewed from the belltower, including parts of the Palazzo Senatorio and the Piazza del Campidoglio, which are the largest illustrations (Nos. 50 and 51) on the right side of the panorama. Churches, cathedrals, and basilicas appear alongside ancient ruins. The Colosseum (No. 143), Trajan's Column (No. 99), St. Peter's Basilica (No. 43), and The Vatican (No. 47) are illustrated.
Publication History and Census
This panorama was created by an unknown artist and published c. 1750, likely for the 'Ground Tour' set. We note three examples in OCLC: Bibliothèque nationale de France, Utrecht University, and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. In our research we also noted an example at the Library of Congress. We note a single instance when this piece has appeared on the private market in recent years.Condition
Very good. Some toning along original fold lines.
