Description

This is 1968 James Paterson Izatt map of the Pebble Beach Golf Links on the Monterey Peninsula, California, signed by the artist. It provides an overview of one of the most storied and celebrated courses in the world.
A Closer Look
Oriented towards the northeast, the entirety of the Pebble Beach Golf Links is included. The location of tees, direction of the course, and distance from tee to hole is provided. Other features of the golf links are included, such as the pro shop, beach club, and tennis courts, along with adjacent attractions, including Carmel Beach and Del Monte Forest.

The origins of the Pebble Beach Golf Links lie with the Hotel del Monte, a massive complex on the Monterey Peninsula constructed by Charles Crocker, one of the 'Big Four' California railroad barons. The hotel opened in 1880, but a golf course was not opened on its grounds until 1919 (referred to here as the course 'laid out' in 1916). Extensive changes took place in the following decade, resulting in the course seen here. With its incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, the course quickly attracted leading players and tournaments, including, eventually, the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.
Publication History and Census
This map was drawn by James Paterson Izatt, whose signature appears towards bottom-right. Though the copyright for this map is dated 1968, the stamps just to the left of the copyright mention the U.S. Open in 1982, suggesting that the present example was reissued sometime in the early-mid 1980s.
