Description

This is a 1922 Yvorra and Barlier city plan or map of Tunis, Tunisia, published after decades of nationalist anti-French resistance. Yvorra and Barlier detail a city finding a modicum of peace after decades of unrest and provide an incredible window into Tunisia in the 1920s.
A Closer Look
With north to the right, Tunis is depicted here in detail. Schools, churches, synagogues, theaters, hospitals, government buildings, and more are all illustrated and labeled. The city's streets are labeled, allowing one to find nearly any location. Belvedere Park occupies a large part of the city on the right and numerous cemeteries are illustrated. The railroad to Bône is identified as is Tunis' electric railroad. Neighborhoods are labeled, including the Kasbah.
Historical Context
Tunisia underwent four decades of resistance to French occupation and protectorate status from 1881. In 1921, the French quashed Tunisian nationalist demands and forced all nationalist organizations underground. They reemerged in 1937, when the nationalists organized a successful general strike.
Publication History and Census
This map was edited and published by Yvorra and Barlier in 1922. It does not appear in OCLC and we have found only one reference to another cataloged example, at the Institut national d'histoire de l'art.
