Engrossing pictorial map of Lake Champlain, New York on the model of Josephine Wickser.

This is a 1934 C. Eleanor Hall pictorial map of Lake Champlain. The map depicts Lake Champlain and the surrounding region in New York and Vermont. This map is highly detailed and provides the viewer with ample information about the colonial and early history of the 'Northern Gateway'.

The creator focuses on the many intertwined narratives surrounding Lake Champlain, including its discovery by French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1609, the French and Indian War, the many different events that took place during the American Revolution, including the capture of Fort Ticonderoga and 'hauling' the cannons from Ticonderoga to Boston. Hall also details the early American history of the region, including the founding of several schools and universities, famous Americans who were either born in the region or spent time there, including several presidents, and various other anecdotes.

Along the border, snippets of history are recounted, from Champlain's discovery of the lake to the founding of the State laboratories at Saratoga in 1934. The title cartouche is ringed by five important figures in the history of the region: Samuel de Champlain, General John Burgoyne, Commander Thomas Macdonough, the Marquis de Montcalm, and General Philip Schuyler and by several modes of transportation that are vital to the region.

The map was created by C. Eleanor Hall of Port Henry, N.Y., on the model of several other 'romance maps' designed by Josephine Wilhelm Wickser, who served as a consultant, and designed by Carlo Nisita, who was recommended to Hall by Wickser. It was printed by The Holding Press, Inc. of Buffalo, N.Y.
