Recreational Map San Diego Zoo.
1950 (undated) 16.25 x 21.5 in (41.275 x 54.61 cm)
This is a 1950 R. W. Schultheis pictorial map of the San Diego Zoo. The striking cartoon was drawn to serve as a cheerful guide to the zoo. Numerous species of animals are illustrated, including monkeys, flamingoes, tortoises, herons, giraffes, bears, tigers, a zebra, a moose, bears, a koala, a kiwi, a kangaroo, a hippo and a rhino. Some of the animals appear to have anthropomorphic qualities. For example, the elephant is illustrated in a seated position, relaxing its hind feet in its pool, while the hyena is laughs hysterically on its back! Numerous locations are labeled throughout the zoo and a key is included along the bottom border with information about which animals can be viewed in which area. This piece is beautifully colored and would make a wonderful gift for any animal lover!
This map was created by R. W. Schultheis and printed by Frye and Smith in San Diego.
