The American Riviera.
This is a colorful 1998 pictorial promotional view of Santa Barbara, California, prepared by Creative Promotions. It captures the enduring charm of the area's quintessential California scenery, sandwiched between the mountains and the ocean.A Closer Look
The view looks over the city of Santa Barbara and environs, from Goleta (Sandpiper Golf Course) in the west to Summerland and Carpinteria in the east, with the Santa Ynez Mountains in the background. Information on local businesses, mostly hotels and restaurants, appears throughout. In addition to towns around Santa Barbara, local landmarks like the historic mission, the Santa Barbara Bowl, the county courthouse, and several colleges and universities are illustrated and labeled. Parking lots are conveniently identified with a simple 'P.' A grid surrounds the map, corresponding to thematic indexes on the verso.Although not its intended purpose, the map nearly demonstrates the intentionally limited sprawl of Santa Barbara compared to some other California cities, the result of policies put in place in the mid-1970s to cap Santa Barbara's population at 85,000 and preserve its townlike character. The result has indeed been strictly limited sprawl in Santa Barbara and surrounding communities, but at the cost of steeply rising home prices and worsening traffic, particularly on U.S.-101, as those working in the city commute from further afield.
