Description
A rare 1861 Civil War era full issue of the New York Herald newspaper with front page woodcut map illustrating the theater of war in the vicinity of Washington D.C. This issue details the historic events leading up to the Battle of Bull Run. The front page features a large detailed map entitled 'Theater of the Grand Army of the Potomac.' The map covers from Washington D.C. to the Occoquan River and from Aldie to Alexandria. It shows some topography, transportation networks, major cities, and military installations. The map is part of the newspaper's full issue, printed on a single broadsheet and folded in quarto. The newspaper contains much of Civil War interest including preliminary reports form Bull Run, notes on the retreat form Manassas, notes on government proceedings, and more. Qutie rare.
