A Pictorial Summary of Texas History.

A humorous c. 1984 pictorial map of Texas by Springbok/Hallmark's master puzzle illustrator Robert Blair Martin.
A Closer Look
The map humorously details Texas history, culture, and geography. There are inset mini-views of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. With the exception of Mexico, none of the surrounding territories are named. The whole is replete with zany illustrations of life in Texas, which ranges from oil wells to rodeos to fishing, space exploration, dinosaur tracks, military life, and much, much more! Near Galveston, the 'Headquarters of Pirate Jean Lafitte' and his galleon are illustrated.
Publication History and Census
This map was published around 1982-84. It is most commonly found as a puzzle, as it was initially designed for the jigsaw puzzle company Springbok (part of Hallmark from 1970). The image has a code in the lower right, 300PTR9955, which is typical of Hallmark posters. It refers to production number (300), production as a poster (PTR), and image code (9955). The present format, as a separately issued poster, is extremely scarce, and we see no other comparable examples.
Cartographer

Robert Blair Martin (July 13, 1950 - December 26, 2006) was an American editor and illustrator associated with Hallmark. Blair was born in Chicago. He studied at the Wentworth Military Academy, graduating in 1968, before going on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University (1972). He served as a captain in the U.S. Army before transitioning to civilian life as a senior illustrator at Hallmark Cards, where he specialized in humor illustrations. His work is characterized by zany perspectives with dense cartoon imagery. Much of his work was converted into puzzle format, but some, particularly his maps, were also issued as posters. He produced pictorial maps of California, Texas, and Florida. He lived most of his life in Overland Park, Kansas.   Further Details...
