Description

This is a 1945 M. S. Bailey pictorial map of the South Pacific.
A Closer Look
With the Coral Sea, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides, and the Fiji Islands in the foreground, the map stretches from Australia to the coast of South America in the distance. The Philippines, the Marshall Islands, the Marianas Islands, and the Gilbert Islands are labeled near the center of the page with individual islands identified within these archipelagos and island chains. The Hawaiian Islands and the Society Islands are labeled, as are Formosa and the Ryukyu Islands. Illustrations of tropical flora occupy the lower left and right corners, with four Pacific Islanders also appearing on the lower right. Clouds, the Moon, Saturn, and a few smaller planets adorn the upper right corner.
Publication History and Census
This map was copyrighted by M. S. Bailey in 1945. We note a single cataloged example which is part of the collection at Pennsylvania State University. The paucity of cataloged examples may reflect this piece's rarity, or it may also be related to its 'unique' title which presents its own challenges to catalogers.

Condition

Very good. Light soiling.
