Description

This is a c. 1870 Edmund Foerster and Company view of the Hudson River from Trophy Point, West Point. The mirror smooth Hudson flows through the center, with sailboats and one steamship plying its waters. Tree-covered hills line both sides of the river and stretch into the background. Three people appear in the foreground, while others cross a bridge situated near the left border. Small houses are illustrated along both the left and right borders.
Trophy Point
Trophy Point is a scenic overlook of the Hudson River Valley located on the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. It has been the subject of numerous works of art since the early 19th century. It was formerly the site of West Point graduation ceremonies before the class sizes became too large in the mid-twentieth century.
Publication History and Census
This view was published by Edmund Foerster and Company c. 1870. This is the only known example of the Foerster and Company edition. We note a similar view published around the same time by the Colt Publishing Company, of which we know of only one surviving example.

Cartographer

Edmund Foerster (fl. c. 1865 - c. 1875) was an Ameircan publisher and possibly lithographer operating out of New York City in the mid 19th century. Very little is known about him, his company (Edmund Foerster and Company), or the work it produced. More by this mapmaker...
