1977 Tauxe / Humphrey Pictorial View of Yale University Campus

YaleUniversity-tauxehumphrey-1977

Drawn by women from two of the earliest co-ed classes at Yale.

Title

Yale University.
  1977 (dated)     16 x 23.5 in (40.64 x 59.69 cm)

Description

A pictorial view of Yale University, drawn by Cynthia Mitchell Tauxe and published by the university's Office of the Secretary in 1977.
A Closer Look
Oriented towards the north-northwest, the view constitutes a well-executed and detailed bird's-eye-view of the university, complete with a keyed index of buildings and monuments. Buildings are illustrated, with the more prominent structures such as the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library labeled. Hand watercolor brings an added dimension and vivacity to this fine example of utilitarian cartography.
Publication History and Census
This view was drawn by Cynthia Mitchell Tauxe, with typography by Heidi Humphrey, and published by the university's Office of the Secretary in 1977. Significantly Tauxe and Humphrey were members, respectively, of the second and third class of women to receive undergraduate degrees from Yale College, which became co-educational beginning in 1969. The OCLC notes four examples, at the University of Michigan, Cornell University, the University of Connecticut, and Harvard University. Yale itself also holds a view that is very likely the same as the present one, cataloged under the title 'Yale University: a walking tour and pictorial map of buildings in the center of New Haven.'

Condition

Very good.
