Description
A scarce pictorial map of the Fox River Valley, Wisconsin, by Nile J. Behncke. Centered on the Fox River Valley, map covers from Rock Island at the northern entrance to Green Bay, south to just beyond Sheboygan, and west as the Wisconsin River. The map features hundreds of vignette illustrations in the style of Jo Mora, illustrating historical events, country life, flora, fauna, important locations, and industry. There are 29 boxed illustrations arranged counterclockwise in a historical progression. The map is further embellished by a decorative floral border of a slightly art nouveau ethic.
This map was published by the Oshkosh Museum Auxiliary. It was a collaborative effort based on research by Mary A. O'Keefe. The map was drawn by Nile J. Behncke. The border graphics are the work of Mary G. Rogers and the numerous vignette images were drawn by Emma P. Comstock. It was printed by the Castle-Pierce Printing Co. It is quite rare with only two examples appearing on the OCLC.

Cartographer
Nile Jurgen Behncke (June 6, 1892 – October 11, 1954) was an American artist and museum administrator active in the first half of the 20th century in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Behncke was born in Oshkosh to the artist Gustave Behncke, a fresco painter and muralist, and his wife Ida Heiss Behncke. He expressed an early affinity to art and initially worked for his father before moving, in 1914, to the Oshkosh Engraving Company. In 1918 he was drafted into the 83rd Ohio Division of the U.S. Army and sent to France to fight in World War I. He was lucky to arrived one day before the Armistice and so saw little action. After the war he return to Oshkosh where he studied art and, in 1924, took a position as directly of the Oshkosh Public Museum, a position he held until his death. He is not a known cartographer and is only map is his 1931 pictorial map of The Fox River Valley drawn as a fundraiser for the Museum he directed. More by this mapmaker...

Very good. Professionally backed poster-style on canvas. Small repaired pinholes in corners.
