Description
A scarce map of Beijing or Peking, China, issued in October of 1929 or Showa 4. The map details the inner and outer cities as well as the Forbidden City and the Legation Quarter. The map was drawn b the Japanese military cartographer Kizaki Jun'ichi (木崎純一) and printed in Tokyo. As this map was being issued, the Empire of Japan was increasingly active militarily in China. In Beijing, Chiang Kai-shek and allies Yan Xishan and Feng Yuxiang, seized control from Zhang Zuolin and renamed the city Peip'ing (北平) or 'Northern Peace'. We have not been able to identify another example of this map.
Cartographer
Kizaki Jun'ichi (fl. c. 1925 – 1941) (木崎純一) was a Japanese military cartographer active in China during the first half of 20th century. Among his more prominent works is a Japanese 'Pocket Atlas of China. More by this mapmaker...
