Promoting Indiana with cartoonish fun.
This is a c. 1946 Bill Skacel cartoon map of Indiana. The map combines cartoonish illustrations of landmarks, universities, and other important locations to help promote Indiana to travelers.A Closer Look
With coverage embracing Indiana in full, Skacel promotes the state in his trademark cartoonish style. The University of Notre Dame (complete with a football player), Purdue University, Indiana University, and Ball State Teachers' College are labeled. Indian Dunes State Park, Wilber Wright's birthplace, the Indiana State Capitol, Clifty Falls State Park, and Wyandotte Caves are among the many sites illustrated that may potentially be of interest to a visiting tourist. Ernie Pyle Memorial Park (illustrated by the famed war correspondent sitting at a desk typing on a typewriter) appears along Indiana's western border. Among the many other illustrations are Johnny Appleseed's grave, steel mills, and a riverboat. A highly cartoonish southerner in the lower right corner states 'I sho am glad to be living close to this state' while an equally cartoonish Native American makes smoke signals that create the map's title.Publication History and Census
This map was drawn by Bill Skacel and published by the E.C. Kropp Company c. 1946. We note a single cataloged example in OCLC, which is part of the collection at Indiana University. The map appears on the market from time to time.Cartographer
Emil C. Kropp (April 1, 1860 - December 24, 1907) was a Milwaukee based postcard and view publisher active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kropp was born in Hamburg, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1871. Around 1897 or 1898 he visted the fatherland where he was inspired by the bourgeoning postcard business. On his return to Wisconsin, he began publishing postcards under the Kropp imprint, with his first postcards appearing in 1898. When Kropp died in 1907, the firm was taken over by his children, Adolph Kropp (1900 - 1918), Walter Kropp (1902 - 1913), and Herbert Louis Kropp (1903 - 1973), who incorporated as E. C. Kropp and Company. The firm produced millions of postcards and by 1956, was liquidated to L. L. Cook. The firm still operates as a subset of the GAF Corporation. Further Details...
