This is a c. 1935 Davis Tours city plan or map of central Palm Beach and West Palm Beach, Florida. The map depicts West Palm Beach from Belvedere Road to 23rd Street and Palm Beach from Banyan Road to Tangier Avenue. Roads throughout both cities are labeled, as are parks and cemeteries. Forty-six locations throughout West Palm Beach are illustrated and numerically labeled, with the numbers corresponding to an index situated along the left side. A red X in marks the Davis Tours office at Evernia Street and Olive Avenue. A further twenty-one locations are identified in Palm Beach, including the Breakers Hotel and Whitehall. Advertisements for trips by sea from Miami to New York, as well as to Havana and Nassau appear along the right side.
Dating this MapIn dating this piece, we used two clues printed on the verso to arrive at a date of c. 1935. One advertisement for the Eastern Steamship Lines states that ships will be sailing leaving Miami for Nassau beginning on Monday, December 30. December 30 falls on a Monday in 1929, 1935, and 1940. There is also an advertisement for Fan American Airways 'Famous Flying Clipper Ships' flying routes between Miami and Nassau and Havana. These 'Clipper Ships' did not begin flying routes in the Caribbean until the mid-1930s. The convergence of these two advertisements allows us to put a date of c. 1935 on this piece.
