Description

This charming 1951 pictorial curiosity map, entitled FishFinder Map No. 1, illustrates sport fishing life along the Napa River in the vicinity of Vallejo, California. The map centers on Mare Island and extends roughly from Point Wilson to Vallejo and from the China Slough to Port Costa, include the Napa River and the eastern part of San Pablo Bay. The map's intent seems to be to promote sport fishing in the Napa River / San Pablo Bay region. Several local businesses are identified, including the Sportsman's Cannery, Tap café, Josephs Fishing Resort, Union Oil and Lube, the Chat and Chew, C and H Sugar, Skippers Sport Fishing Boats, Cobb and Spring Sporting Goods, Falcon Chart Boat Tours, and Norman's Resort. The waterways and shores are lined with happy fishermen. In the bottom left a man in a parka driving a convertible speeds northward on highway 40 with a motorcycle cop in hot pursuit. The verso contains notes on vishing in the region as well as 'recommended fishing party boats' and 'recommended services,' many of which are noted on the map as well.

We are uncertain who drew this map, but it was issued in conjunction with the 'FishFinder' radio program on KLX (910 kc) out of Oakland. We have identified no other examples of this unusual map and it is also unclear if there is a 'FishFinder Map No. 2.'
