Title

Orlando : a view of the world.
  1988 (dated)     28 x 21.75 in (71.12 x 55.245 cm)

Description

A scarce 1988 pictorial view of Orlando and south Florida, drawn by Mark Spore and published by Harvey Hutter. It highlights the city's skyline and landmarks, along with nearby attractions, including Disney World.
A Closer Look
Oriented towards the south, the view highlights the skyline of Orlando proper along with nearby attractions such as Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center. Lakes Okeechobee and Eola, Orlando's International Airport, and the Church St. Train Station are also prominently illustrated. The arena at right, labelled 'the Magic' after the city's expansion professional basketball team, was still under construction when this view was published. Other Florida cities and landmarks appear in the background, along with more distant points, but pale in comparison to the main focus of the view on the Orlando area.

This view was inspired by Saul Steinberg's 1976 'View of the World from 9th Avenue.' The diminutive status of New York at bottom-left is a playful riff on the original work and New Yorkers' sense of their city's centrality to the world.
Publication History and Census
This view was drawn by Mark Spore and published in 1988 by Harvey Hutter and Co. It is not recorded in the OCLC and is scarce to the market.

Cartographer

Harvey Hutter and Co. (fl. c. 1984 - 1995) was an Ossining, New York-based publisher of pictorial views best known for its 'view of the world' series. At least 15 views of cities in the United States, Canada, and beyond were produced by the company, done in the style of Saul Steinberg's iconic 'View of the World from 9th Avenue,' which adorned the cover of the New Yorker in March 1976.
