A Closer Look

Oriented towards the northeast, the view covers most of San Diego County, from Oceanside and Carlsbad at left to San Ysidro and Tijuana on the U.S.-Mexico border at right. Mt. Palomar (including its famous observatory), Mt. Laguna, and other peaks of the Peninsular Range dominate in the background. The use of green to fill in space between the labeled landmarks, no doubt to avoid the view looking too 'busy,' belies the degree of urban and suburban development in the area seen here. For example, Mission Blvd., in the foreground at left, is in reality flanked by bungalows, shops, and restaurants, not to mention an amusement park containing a sizable roller coaster.

Towns and cities are labeled throughout, along with streets, highways, historic Spanish missions, other historic sites (such as the Julian Hotel and Frank Kimball House), military bases, hotels, educational and research institutions, theaters, museums, train stations, airports, parks, golf courses, and other landmarks, including internationally recognized locations such as SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo. All the tall buildings and skyscrapers in San Diego's downtown are individually labeled, as are the many museums, pavilions, and other structures on the site of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in Balboa Park. A grid surrounds the map, providing coordinates for sites, which are listed alphabetically on the verso.

This map was designed by Unique Media and initially published in 1983, though the copyright on the verso indicates that this is a later 1986 printing. In both editions, OCLC notes five institutional holdings.
