Description
This is a 1945 Gus Schneider pictorial map of San Francisco, California. The map depicts the city from Fleishhacker Park across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and from the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. Wonderfully illustrated, life in mid-1945 San Francisco is evident, particularly in the number of military installations that are labeled. The 9th Service Command, the U.S.O. Troops-in-Transit Lounge, the Headquarters of the 4th Air Force, and U.S.O. dormitory and Red Cross Canteen are only a few of these sites. Sailors are illustrated throughout the city, some of which are seeing the sites, including Chinatown and Golden Gate Park, while others are hard at work at the naval supply depot or training at the Treasure Island U.S. Navy Training Center. One unfortunate sailor, drawn atop an aircraft carrier's flight deck, had apparently hit his head on the Bay Bridge! It is also important to note the large sign in the Pacific pointing the way to Tokyo. Transportation offices, particularly those of the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, are also prominently marked. Other sites around San Francisco, including the Palace of Fine Arts and the Palace of the Legion of Honor, are also included. While this example of this fantastic piece was printed as a promotion for the long-gone Hastings Clothing stores in San Francisco, we have found evidence that it was first published as artwork for the cover of a guide to San Francisco create for a United Nations Conference in 1945.
