This is a striking c. 1930 railway map of Spain and Portugal that appeared in the Guia Rich railway guide. It captures the Iberian rail network during a brief 'golden age' on the eve of the Great Depression and Spanish Civil War.

The map covers Spain and Portugal, with an emphasis on the former, whose rail lines are color-shaded according to the company that operated them, with the most extensive networks belonging to the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Zaragoza y Alicante and the Compañía de ferrocarriles del Norte. The lines of the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles Andaluces, the Compañía de los Ferrocarriles de Madrid a Cáceres y Portugal, and several smaller companies are also traced. Advertisements appealing to regular travelers appear at right and bottom.

Historical Context

In the early 20th century, the Spanish railway network was dominated by large, private companies, most notably the Compañía del Norte and MZA (Madrid-Zaragoza-Alicante). Operating within Spain's challenging, mountainous terrain, these companies grappled with high structural costs and an overly centralized, radial layout centered on major cities, especially Madrid and Barcelona. At the same time, smaller, regional lines struggled to advance. During the First World War, although Spain remained neutral, its rail system faced intense, relentless traffic demands to transport goods for wartime economies. Deprived of foreign replacement parts, rolling stock, and high-quality coal, the network suffered severe physical deterioration. Compounded by rigid, state-regulated fare caps and skyrocketing post-war inflation, the private rail companies plummeted into a severe financial crisis by the early 1920s.

This downwards trajectory shifted dramatically during the dictatorship of General Miguel Primo de Rivera (1923 -1930), which championed economic nationalism and aggressive infrastructure spending, including the allocation of significant public capital to rescue and subsidize the struggling private lines. This intervention ushered in a brief 'golden age' of revitalization before the Great Depression, leading to extensive track expansions, modernized rolling stock, and Spain's earliest major railway electrification projects, including several across the Basque Country. By 1930, the network had achieved unprecedented connectivity and technical modernization. Still, in the years that followed, due to the Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War, Spain's rail network would be set back by decades.

Publication History and Census

This map was issued with Guia Rich, a popular monthly railway guide that was published in Barcelona between the 1920s and 1950s. It is undated, but from the railways present should date to c. 1930. This map was issued in multiple editions, which can be distinguished by analysis of the rail lines and advertisements. Since these were all undated, establishing a full census would be difficult, but an example of a map similar to the present map is held and cataloged by the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (dated to between 1929 and 1931).

Good. Wear along original fold lines. Old tape repairs on verso. Verso repairs to fold separations. Closed tear extending 1 inch into printed area from top margin. Small areas of loss at fold intersections.
