This is a c. 1914 Bulgarian-language broadsheet manuscript map of the Western Front during World War I (1914 - 1918), including coverage of Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The map reflects intense Bulgarian interest in the conflict despite its official policy of neutrality. Then aggressively courted by both the Allied (Entente) and Central powers as a strategic pathway to the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria understood that retaining neutrality was merely a pipe dream. Bulgaria joined the war on the side of the Central Powers in October 1915.A Closer Look
Coverage extends from the southern Netherlands to northern France and from the English Channel to Germany. The black arrows indicate German advances, while the green arrows and bars mark French and British defenses and counterattacks. One such arrow defends Paris from the northwest, illustrating the Battle of the Marne. Cities labeled include Reims, Brussels, and The Hague.
