Description


This is a c. 1970 Hindu pictorial map of Chitrakoot, a pilgrimage center in north central India. Chitrakoot is connected with the epic Ramayana and is an important location in the life of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu. It is also admired for its picturesque landscapes, dramatic waterfalls, and serene natural beauty.
A Closer Look
Landmarks are illustrated throughout, along with markets, a taxi stand, and a castle. Three train stations appear just below the title. The pictorial border recounts the story of Rama; part of the Ramayana and its commentaries appear below the bottom border.
Publication History and Census
This map was published c. 1970 by Sitaram Pustakalay, a family run business in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh that sells religious books and has been operating in Mathura for over 150 years. It was printed by Mudrak Govardhan Press. This is the only known cataloged example.

Condition


Good. Even overall toning. Some soiling. Margin trimmed to border in upper right corner. Slight loss to margins.
