Only known example of the U.S. Navy shipboard Zine, 'The Sultan Sentinel.'

A very unusual 1954 map of Guam and zine, The Sultan Sentinel, published for crewmembers on the outbound Pacific voyage of the S.S. Sultan. The Sultan Sentinel was a daily zine published daily on board the U.SN.S. General Daniel I Sultan for the entertainment of the soldiers on board. This edition of the crudely printed and copied 8 page magazine featured onboard movie schedules, crew poetry, news, sports news, lost and found, cartoons, and a spiritually affirming letter from the ship's chaplain. The presently offered full 'Souvenir Edition' was published in June 22, 1954. The cover features a charming pictorial map of Guam identifying sites important to American Military men, such as Anderson Air Field, the Santa Rita Housing Area, Hoover Park, and more. Although shipboard zines were not uncommon, few have survived. The present offering is the only example of any issue of the Sultan Sentinel we have been able to identify.
