A scarce Meiji 8, 1875 Japanese issue map of the Bay of Bangkok, Thailand. This part of Thailand is rarely appears on antique maps in any detail – so this is quite a find. The map covers from the mouth of the Chao Phraya River to the islands of Ko Chaung and Ko Chan at the entrance to the Bay. Offers some inland detail with regard to topography as well as some shading to indicate shallow shoals.
This map was prepared to illustrate an extremely rare Meiji Era Japanese travelogue describing a voyage to Thailand or Siam. We have identified only two other examples of this map located in the archives of the Waseda University Library, Tokyo; the Kyoto University Library, Kyoto.
Siamese Kikouzu (暹羅紀行図 ), Tokyo : Kōbush) 1875.
Very good. Minor toning and wear on original fold lines. Else clean. A few minor wormhole repairs.
