Hong Kong's colonial heyday.
A striking c. 1890 panoramic photo of Hong Kong from Victoria Harbor. The image - two joined sheets mounted on card - captures Hong Kong's colonial heyday, revealing grandiose buildings and a bustling harbor. The Mid-Levels and Peak loom in the background. The verso features a somewhat incongruous photo of the grand home of Mr. and Mrs. Engelhard at the Bindjey Estate (tobacco), pictured in front with their children.Bindjey Estate
Bindjey Estate was a major tobacco plantation from the Dutch colonial era (late 1800s-early 1900s) in North Sumatra, famous for its massive tobacco production, especially for the 'Deli Wrapper' cigar market. It remains unclear who Engelhard was, but the grandeur of the home suggests a plantation overseer. It is possible the name refers to Gustav Engelbrecht, the German owner of Bindjey Estate, who remained in Sumatra before returning to Hamburg, Germany, in 1892.Publication History and Census
