Rare map showing the unoffiical Japanese settlement in Hongkou, Shanghai.
A rare and fascinating Showa 14 or 1939 map of the Hongkou, pre-war Shanghai's unofficial Japanese Settlement. By 1939, the Japanese were the largest foreign ethnic group active in Shanghai. Most were concentrated in the Hongkou district, depicted here, just north across the Wusong River from the Bund. The map illustrates and identifies Japanese business as well as municipal buildings, cultural buildings, and temples. It was as series of supposedly anti-Japanese 'incidents' in Hongkou, that precipitated the Japanese WWII invasion of Shanghai. This map is quite rare and we have not seen another example.Condition
Very good. Blank on verso. Some wear on original fold lines.
