Description

This is a 1976 pictorial wine map of Italy, designed by Charlotte Sorré to promote the Italian wine imports of Villa Banfi.
A Closer Look
The map displays the Italian Peninsula with major cities, topographic features (such as the Alps and major lakes), and historical sites, including Greco-Roman ruins and Medieval abbeys, are illustrated throughout. Regional wines imported by Banfi are also depicted, while at the bottom is a scene of scrumptious wine and food pairings, including bread, cheeses, pasta, antipasti, and frutti di mare. A decorative cartouche, compass rose, and border add charming embellishments.
House of Banfi
The House of Banfi or Villa Banfi was founded in 1919 on Spring Street in New York City's Little Italy and is today one of the largest wine importers in the United States. Banfi is still owned and operated by the Mariani family. John Mariani, Sr. named the company after his aunt, Teodolinda Banfi (1862 - 1938). Though born in Connecticut, Mariani and his mother moved back to Italy to live with her sister, Teodolinda, then head of the household staff of the Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, Achille Ratti (1857 - 1939). In 1922, Ratti became Pope Pius XI, and Teodolinda continued to serve as the manager of his household staff, the first layperson to hold such a position; she also appears to have been the first woman not a nun to live in the Sistine Palace.

Mariani returned to the U.S. and opened a shop in New York City, initially importing various delicacies. In 1933, when the 21st Amendment overturned Prohibition, Mariani immediately began importing Italian wine. Banfi became one of the major suppliers of Italian wines, eventually acquiring distributors and expanding into other wine-producing countries. In 1978, soon after this map's production, Banfi purchased land at Montalcino near Siena and established its own vineyard, which developed a reputation for sustainable production.
Publication History and Census
This map was designed in 1976 by commercial artist Charlotte Sorré for the House of Banfi. Only one institution holds the map, Cornell University, and it has no known market history.

Cartographer

Charlotte Sorré (August 1932 - March 8, 2016), or Sorre unaccented, was a New York City-based painter and commercial artist best known for her drawings and paintings of animals. Sorré was born Charlotte Kjelstad in Eatonville, Washington, south of Seattle. She attended the California College of Arts and Crafts and after graduation relocated to New York City, perhaps briefly living in Europe before returning to New York permanently. In 1962, she married Lucio Mario Sorre, an Itlaian-American journalist and public relations agent, and had two children. Over time, Sorré became known as one of the great American painters of animal portraits, including thoroughbred horses and show dogs. More by this mapmaker...
