Arnout, Jean-Baptiste (sold)

Jean-Baptiste Arnout (June 24, 1788 - October 5, 1873) was a French artist, lithographer, and engraver. Born in Dijon, Arnout is best remembered with creating a series of views of Paris, along with a beautiful series of views of the French countryside. Arnout retired in 1857. His son, Jules Arnout (June 1, 1814 - 1868) was also a successful engraver, artist, and lithographer. They collaborated on several works during the 1830s, and the younger Arnout continued working as a lithographer after his father retired.

This is a c. 1845 Jean-Baptiste Arnout view of the église de la Madeleine in Paris, France. A beautiful piece, the Madeleine, situated on the Place de la Madeleine in Paris's 8th arrondissement, is illustrated from a slightly off-center perspective, allowing for a lovely illustration of Corinthian columns along the side. Parisians in carriages, on horseback, and on foot traverse the Place de la Madeleine and numerous individuals climb the steps into the church. The history of the Madeleine is one that encapsulates the many political changes in France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. (more details)
