Description


This is a c. 1920 Marco Marcovici pictorial map of Brussels (Bruxelles), Belgium. Museums, churches, war memorials, and other monuments are illustrated in profile. The celebrated Mannekin Pis appears on the left side below the Grand Place and to the right of the Église Bon-Secours. Other illustrated sites include the infamous Colonial Museum (Musée Coloniale), the botanical garden, and numerous city parks. Red lines trace city tram lines and red circles mark each lines terminuses. A numerical index identifying 112 locations throughout Brussels appears along the left and right sides and corresponds with those locations on the central map.

This map was created and published by Marco Marcovici c. 1920. This map is not cataloged in OCLC. We have been unable to locate any other examples.

Cartographer


Marco Marcovici (May 31, 1873 - February 2, 1938) was a Belgian-Romanian photographer and publisher. Born in Jassy, Romania, Marcovici arrived in Belgium in on June 15, 1901. Marcovici was active as a picture postcard publisher from soon after his arrival in Belgium until his death. After World War I, he built his business around 'disaster tourism' by publishing photographs of the battlefields and their ruined landscapes. In the 1920s and 1930s Marcovici branched out from postcards and began publishing maps and guidebooks as well. He married Nelly Eliza Marie Dumont on May 10, 1902, with whom he had one son, born in April 1903. They divorced on June 9, 1917. He then remarried on May 22, 1920 to Lucia Hermann. Good. Exhibits wear along original fold lines. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Exhibits small areas of infill at fold intersections.
