A charming c. 1950 map of central Buenos Aires, Argentina, produced by David Rodriguez-Trío. It highlights the impressive infrastructure and urban planning developed in the early 20th century, as well as changes in the city brought about by the rise of populist President Juan Perón (first presidency 1946 - 1955).A Closer Look
Oriented towards the west, looking in from the Rio de la Plata, this map takes in the central portion of Buenos Aires. Train stations are situated around the map, with the large Retiro-Mitre, opened in 1915, renamed here as 'President Perón Station' (Estación Presidente Perón). The Estación Constitución (Roca) at left and the Estación Once de Septiembre at top were also utilized for passenger service, while at bottom-left, the Casa Amarilla and associated industrial rail and port facilities handled freight.Blue lines indicate the Buenos Aires subway system (the Subte), opened in 1913 and continuously expanded thereafter. It was the first subway system in the southern hemisphere or anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world. Red text outside the neatline provides the names of the individual subway lines.
Red arrows point out the (mostly one-way) direction of traffic on streets. A large maroon arrow points to the location of Khon Frères, a clothier that sponsored the map. Another advertisement for a Russian-French restaurant and nightclub, the 'Chateau Caucasien,' sits at bottom, while additional advertisements appear on the verso. Blue text notes the names of neighborhoods, such as Once and Recoleta. At center is the Plaza de Mayo, where mass demonstrations in 1945 helped bring Perón to power, the Plaza del Congreso, and many government buildings and offices.
Publication History and Census
This map was produced by David Rodriguez-Trío around the year 1950. No information is available about the cartographer, but it appears that the Guia 'Trio' referred to in the margin here was published in several editions in the 1950s and 1960s. This map is not cataloged in institutional collections and is scarce to the market.Condition
