Uncommon English language map of Nicaragua showing the Nicaragua Route (Nicaragua Canal).

This is a lovely 1827 map of Nicaragua by John Irving. It covers from Leon south to the Gulf of Nicoya and east to the Laguna de Perlas. Includes the Lake of Leon (Lago Xolotian) and Lake of Nicaragua (Lago Nicaragua). Notes considerable topographic detail with elevation shown by hachure. Important cities, rivers, lagoons, islands, forests and hills are identified. Abandoned English settlements are also noted. The map shows the route from the Atlantic by the Rio de San Juan, the lakes of Nicaragua and Leon, to the Pacific.

In 1816, Orlando Roberts took command of a cargo ship in Jamaica and set out to trade with native Indians. He sailed to the Bay of Mandingo, New Caledonia, Porto Bello, Mosquito Shore, Rio del Oro, Pearl Kay Lagoon, Cape Gracias a Dios, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. In Guatemala he was kidnapped by pirates, from whom he later escaped to Cuba.

This map was engraved by W. Archibald for Constable's Miscellany. Drawn under the direction of Orlando W. Roberts by John Irving. Appears in the Narrative of Voyages and Excursions on the East Coast and in the Interior of Central America; Describing a Journey of the River San Juan, and Passage Across the Lake of Nicaragua to the City of Leon: Pointing Out the Advantages of a Direct Commercial Intercourse with the Natives.
