Description

This is a beautiful 1782 view illustrated by J. F. Reitz depicting the Battle of Dogger Bank during the American Revolutionary War. This view beautifully depicts the bloody battle between the Dutch and English ships during the fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Several Dutch and English fleets (with flags flying from the mast) are illustrated. Rips appear in sails as ships are damaged by canon fire. A sinking ship with fleeing survivors appears in the foreground. The sea and the sky are beautifully rendered.

The Battle, part of the American Revolutionary War, was fought in Dogger Bank, a large sandbank in the North Sea. The British fleet was commanded by Vice Admiral Sir Hyde Parker, while the Dutch squadron fought under Vice Admiral Johan Zoutman. The bloody battle resulted in a Dutch victory, in spite of heavy casualties.

This lithograph view of the event was drawn by J. F. Reitz and engraved by Mathias de Salliett. It was printed by Johannes Smit and Sons in 1782.
