Rare map of Fuzhou illustrating postal districts.
This is a scarce c. 1915 Chinese issue postal map of Fuzhou (Foochow), China. The map was issued by the Foochow Printing Bureau of the Treasury Department. While the map does include a fair amount of English, including the title and a 'Conventional Signs' key in the lower right, most of the cartographic content is in Chinese. Postal offices, sub-offices, and post boxes are illustrated with red dots. Old and new streets are also distinguished to reflect the city's rapid urban development in the early 20th century. In the lower left corner there is an inset detail of the Hungshankiao Section, a suburb located on the Minjiang just west of the city center.Today, Fuzhou is the capital of China's Fujian province and is one of the country's most important industrial and transportation hub. The city is also known for its 'Three Lanes and Seven Alleys' historic district, one of the best-preserved collections of Qing and Ming buildings in China.
This map is rare. Although there is an OCLC number, there are no cited holdings. The only other example we are aware of is in private hands.
Condition
Very good. Backed on archival tissue. Minor repair crack, upper border. Light soiling top and bottom.
