Description
This is a 1915 British Admiralty World War I recruiting broadside depicting sailors and an officer atop a crow's nest. One sailor looks through a spyglass to the right while the others gaze in various directions. Flags fly in the background. The blank white box in the bottom right corner usually displays information concerning local recruiting offices.
Publication History and Census
This broadside was created and published by the British Admiralty and printed by W. H. Smith and Son in 1915. We note cataloged examples as being part of the collections at the University of California Berkeley, the Australian War Memorial, McMaster University, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Hoover Institution, the Library of Congress, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This broadside is scarce on the private market, with only a handful appearing in recent years.Condition
Fair. Wear along fold lines. Closed tear extending 1.5 inches into printed area from top margin professionally repaired on verso. Old tape repairs evident on verso. Verso repairs to fold separations. Both bottom corners and bottom center reinstated.
