Open-top bus outings from Paris!

This is a c. 1924 Société des transports en commun de la région parisienne (STCRP) map illustrating day open-top bus outings operated by the company from Paris. The map depicts thirty different itineraries, all of which leave from the STCRP office blocks from the Palais Garnier, a beautiful beaux-arts opera house in the center of Paris. Each excursion stopped at several different cultural sites and returned to the STCRP office in Paris. Some of the itineraries included stops are Versailles, the cathedral in Chartres, and the Château de Fontainebleau. Others included visits to Reims, Chantilly, Soissons, Nemours, Rouen, and several other notable cultural and historic sites around the region. The various itineraries fan out from Paris and each is illustrated in detail, with a vignette of the most notable site on each itinerary highlighting the map. Detailed descriptions of each excursion are included along all four sides of the map, some of which include guided tours of the sites visited. The route of each excursion is traced, noting the various locations where stops are made and features of the landscape, such as forests and rivers.

This map was produced by the Société des transports en commun de la region parisienne c. 1924.

The Société des Transports en Commun de la Région Parisienne (1921 - 1941) (STCRP) (Society for Public Transport of the Paris Region) existed from 1921 until 1941, when it was absorbed by the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris. At the end of World War I, the six company’s responsible for public transportation (buses and tramways) in Paris and in the Department of the Seine were financially ruined. The Department of the Seine bought these six companies and then in 1921 confided the operation of the buses and tramways in the region to the STCRP. Unlike today’s RATP, which is responsible for running public transportation in Paris and its suburbs, the STCRP was a private company. The STCRP set about modernizing and unifying the disparate systems, and, beginning in 1925, the STCRP began phasing-out the trams. The trams of Paris were completely eliminated by August 1938. During World War II, the CMP, which ran the Paris métro (subway) and the STCRP were still separate entities but were 'made complimentary'. On January 1, 1949, the RATP was created and absorbed both the STCRP and the CMP.   Further Details...
