Carmelo and Bauermann (sold)

Carmelo and Bauermann (c. 1887 - 1965), sometimes as Carmelo y Bauermann, was a publishing house established in Manila by Don Eulalio Carmel y Lakandula (d. 1906), an artist-engraver, and William Bauermann, a German lithographer and cartographer, who was working for the Bureau of Forestry at the time. The firm operated out of 2057 Azcarraga. The press soon became one of the leaders in modern printing in the Philippines. Carmelo's son, Alfredo Casas Carmelo (1896-1985) was groomed to run the business from a young age, including a period studying lithographic printing in Germany. However, while in Germany he became fascinated with aviation and went on to become the first certified aviator in the Philippines and the leading Filipino aviator of his generation. He operated the printnig firm until 1938, at which point it was acquired as a subsidiary by Cacho Hermanos Inc (CHI) and Alfredo committed himself to aviation full-time. Carmelo and Bauermann continued to print into the 1960s and perhaps later as a subsidiary of CHI.
