Hasegawa Seiya (sold) (長谷川誠也)

Hasegawa Seiya (長谷川誠也; November 26, 1876 - August 30, 1940), better known as Hasegawa Tenkei (長谷川天渓), was a Japanese intellectual and literary critic. He was born in Niigata Prefecture and grew up in Kashiwazaki. After junior high school, he moved to Tokyo to attend Tokyo Senmon Gakko (later Waseda University), where he studied under the literary critic / intellectuals Tsubouchi Shōyō (坪内逍遥, 1859 - 1935) and Onishi Hajime (大西祝, 1864 - 1900). After graduating, he began working for the publisher Hakubunkan (博文館), editing several publications including Taiyō ('The Sun,' 太陽), a journal primarily of literary criticism that is often considered Japan's first general-purpose magazine. For much of the 1910s, he was the director of Hakubunkan, and in the mid-1920s served as editor-in-chief of Taiyō. Hasegawa's writings drew on many influences, including world history, psychoanalysis, Naturalism, and aesthetics. He played an important role in developing and popularizing the field of literary criticism in Japan.

This is a scarce 1914 Japanese-language map of Europe in the opening months of World War I, edited by Hasegawa Seiya for the periodical True Account of the War in Europe. It reflects the significant but often overlooked role that World War I had in catapulting Japan into a global power and setting the stage for World War II. Although little known in the West, Japan was an enthusiastic member of the Entente Alliance during World War I (1914 - 1918), which it leveraged to expand its influence in China and East Asia.
