Powel, Virginia Worthington (sold)
Virginia Worthington Powel (February 21, 1915 - May 23, 1999) was an American artist and teacher. Born in Washington, D.C., Powel moved to Texas with her family at a young age. It is unclear when she started teaching art at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, but records suggest she taught there beginning in the 1960s and through the early 1970s. Her husband, Harford Willing Hare Powel (November 11, 1916 - November 21, 1965) also taught at Andover. Virginia Powel died in Bradenton Beach, Florida.
One of America's best private schools.
This is a 1960 Virginia Powel composite view of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Philipps Academy is an elite co-educational university preparatory school founded in 1778. Nineteen buildings that are part of the Academy are expertly drawn in profile. These include Samuel Phillips Hall, the Borden and Memorial Gymnasium, the Addison Gallery of American Art, Cochran Chapel, and the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library. The Academy's sigil is situated in the upper right corner, and an illustration of an armillary sphere appears in front of the library in the lower right corner. (more details)
