This is a 1943-1944 intelligence archive prepared for the aerial campaign preceding the invasion of Kwajalein Atoll, offering unique insights into how American World War II aircrews were briefed for combat missions. This is a 1985 view of the Castro neighborhood in San Francisco, produced by artist Graham Bruce. It combines elements of a conventional pictorial map of the period (advertisements for local businesses) with a more ethereal aesthetic, celebrating the nightlife of this 'mecca' of LGBTQ culture. However, the view was also produced in the most frightening period of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in San Francisco's gay community, and may have been intended as an elegy for both the people who had died and the culture of gay liberation that was imperiled by the epidemic. Likely the first specific map of Chile's Atacama Desert, this is Wilhelm Döll's 1854 survey of Atacama, prepared during Rodolfo Amando Philippi's government-sponsored expedition into the largely uncharted interior. Extending from Cobija to Copiapó and eastward across salt flats, volcanic ranges, mining districts, and high Andean routes, it captures the Atacama at a pivotal moment—when scientific exploration, indigenous geography, silver discoveries, and competing Chilean and Bolivian territorial ambitions were beginning to transform the desert. Both a record of extraordinary fieldwork under conditions of extreme aridity and a harbinger of the mineral development and international conflict that followed, the map helped establish the geographical foundations for Chile's expanding interest in its northern frontier. This is Sebastian Münster's 1545 map of Bohemia, the earliest acquirable printed map of what is now the Czech Republic. This example appeared in the 1574 German edition of Münster's Cosmographia Universalis, a work notable for presenting many of the first printed maps to a broad lay audience, based on contemporaneous surveys and toponymy rather than data from classical sources. Münster's source for this map was Nicolaus Claudianus' 1518 map of Bohemia, which now exists in only one known surviving example. Münster's map is the only version of Claudianus' map available to the collector. (more details)

This is a striking 1832 Heinrich Berghaus map of the Philippines. It was issued for Berghaus' loose-leaf Atlas von Asien, the best-informed general cartographic work on Asia to appear in the mid-19th century.
