This is an 1846 British Admiralty nautical chart or maritime map of Amoy (Xiamen / 厦门市), China, one of the treaty ports created by the Treaty of Nanking. It was published shortly after the First Opium War (1839 - 1842) and the signing of the Treaty of Nanking. This chart is the result of the important survey work that followed in the wake of the Opium Wars and the opening of wide-scale trade with China. It provided the bases of British maritime trade in and around Amoy for the subsequent 2 decades. (more details)

This is a 1935 Japanese-language map of Ethiopia and its environs published by the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun in tandem with the Abyssinian Crisis at the outbreak of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War (1935 -1937). A strong example of Cornelis van Wytfliet's 1597 Anian Regnum; this is the first separate map to focus on the Pacific Northwest. The map presents the area now occupied by most of the west coast of the United States, Canada, and Alaska, in spite of this region having been beyond the ken of European explorers and geographers for centuries to come. This is a fascinating 1916 Fred R. Mellis map of eastern Oregon, capturing the height of an early 20th-century gold mining and logging boom. The map focuses on Baker, which was then emerging as the regional center of mining, timber, and agriculture. As a diazo (reverse blueprint), the map can only have been issued in small quantities, and its annotation of industry, transport networks, and electrical and irrigation networks suggests it was made for administrative use.
