This is an 1873 Ukiyo-e triptych produced by Kuniteru II depicting the new Nihonbashi Bridge in Central Tokyo. The most culturally significant bridge in Japan, the historical terminus of the Tōkaidō highway, the Edo-era arched bridge had been replaced by a Western-style flat bridge the year before this print's publication, both a practical and symbolic change. This is a rare and important 1884 Japanese folding map of Fujian Province, China, including Taiwan, prepared by Yasuda Torao. It was published just eleven days after the French destroyed the Chinese Fujian fleet at Fuzhou, a key event in the Sino-French War (1884 - 1885). Its publication put a detailed regional map in front of Japanese readers as the Sino-French War brought fighting to the Taiwan Strait and the island's geography and the limits of Qing authority had become matters of international strategic interest. Issued a decade after a Japanese military expedition to Taiwan and a decade before Japan seized the island as a colonial possession, the map appeared as Japanese ambitions vis-à-vis China were rapidly growing, upending the traditional hierarchy in East Asia. This 1921 Florida East Coast Railway engineering wall map, revised through 1924, was prepared by the company's Chief Engineer's Office in St. Augustine for internal reference. Its combination of railway connections, technical tables, and other information presents the transportation network near its height and during a period of breakneck development in South Florida. This is a 1901 Service géographique de l'Armée topographic map of Kashgar, the western Taklamakan Desert, and the mountain approaches connecting Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) with Kashmir and the Pamirs. Issued for the Service's state-of-the-art map series of Asia, it belongs to a French effort to assemble uniform continental coverage at a time when systematic surveys, travelers' itineraries, and largely unexplored terrain still had to be reconciled. This era moreover saw the region receive greater geopolitical attention and contestation; while the Anglo-Russian 'Great Game' in Central Asia wound down, a new sphere of rivalry opened in Tibet and Xinjiang as the Qing Dynasty reached its nadir. France watched these developments carefully, and warily, as the Third Republic eagerly sought to develop an alliance with both Russia and Britain to isolate Germany. (more details)

This is a monumental 1887 Arabic and French administrative plan of Alexandria, prepared by the Egyptian Tanzim, the largest and most important map of Alexandria printed in the 19th century. The map records the city's streets, institutions, and government property in the early years of British occupation. Its extensive bilingual indexes turn a building-level survey into a working directory of the city, distinguishing private buildings from state establishments, religious institutions, and baths. The inventory of government property is particularly revealing, identifying destroyed fortifications and buildings occupied by British soldiers. This is Charles Magnus' circa 1863 Panorama of the Mississippi Valley and its Fortifications, a Civil War broadside that places the struggle for control of the river within a detailed commercial landscape. Four adjoining strip maps follow the Mississippi from St. Louis to the Gulf of Mexico, locating military positions among plantations, landings, woodyards, mills, and railway connections. This is an 1892, updated to 1910, Russian-language map of Central Asia, prepared by the Military Topographic Department of the Main Staff of the Imperial Russian Army. Focusing on the area between Bukhara and the Ferghana Valley, it provides exceptional topographic detail of the region, which had only come under Russian rule in the preceding decades. This 1859 Buddhist ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada II and Utagawa Hiroshige II pairs the salvation legend of Shinpuku-ji with a view of its later-destroyed temple complex. Issued for The Miracles of Kannon, it represents the second station of the Chichibu pilgrimage through both its sacred history and its physical setting. This is a visually compelling 1896 E.P. Noll and Company map of Philadelphia and environs. The map was published to capitalize on the late-19th-century Philadelphia cycling craze at its apex. Philadelphia's relatively level terrain made it ideal for cycling, and maps like this opened the region to velocipedic exploration. It addressed a practical obstacle to recreational touring: finding usable routes through a road system of uneven quality. Noll combined this route selection with detailed local geography, allowing riders to plan excursions through a landscape of suburban villages, country hotels, mills, and railway stations. This May 1940 Richard Edes Harrison infographic map combines a graph of the world's war resources with a map of the British and French Empires, and an ingenious diagram of the distances between Britain, France, and their colonial possessions. Together, they tell a story of Nazi Germany's success up to that moment: not as an inevitable result of economic or military prowess, but as a failure of the free world to recognize the threat they faced until it was upon them. Harrison, and indeed Fortune Magazine, took pains to show the American public the immediate relevance of what was still seen as a European war, and the importance of American assistance to the Allies, if not intervention. This is an extremely rare 1630 map of the Holy Land by Guy-Michel Le Jay depicting the Exodus. It was produced for the first printed volumes of Le Jay's monumental multilingual Bible, known as the Paris Polyglot Bible. Inexplicably, this beautiful map was omitted from the final production of that Bible in 1645, contributing significantly to its rarity. Moreover, no other separate examples with text have surfaced. This is a December 1937 Imperial Japanese Army map of Hong Kong and the New Territories, marked 'secret' (秘) and published four years before the 1941 Japanese takeover of Hong Kong. Prepared by the Imperial Army's Land Survey Department and issued by the General Staff Headquarters, it records the colony and its mainland approaches during the opening year of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945). Its significance is the conjunction of detailed military geography and timing: Japan occupied nearby Guangzhou the following October, bringing Japanese forces into threatening proximity to the frontier mapped here. There can be little doubt that this map presages Black Christmas. (more details)

This is the 1776 edition of Sebastian G. Longchamps's map of eastern North America, published at the outset of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783) to capitalize on popular French interest in the conflict. The map was first issued in 1756, during the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763), but has here been revived with significant new engraving, additional relevant details, and a new title to illustrate the opening theaters of the American Revolution. Key revisions give greater prominence to the individual New England colonies and expand the coastal nomenclature of northern Newfoundland, where France retained valuable fishing privileges despite losing Canada. This is a 1778 French naval chart of the Mississippi Delta and northern Gulf Coast, issued for the Neptune Americo-Septentrional under the orders of Antoine de Sartine. Compiled from manuscript plans by French navigators and engineers, it combines coastal soundings with a detailed account of the waterways, wetlands, settlements, and forts behind the shore. Its coverage connects New Orleans and the Mississippi's outlets with Mobile and Pensacola, bringing the principal Gulf Coast approaches together on one chart. This work was part of a broad mapping effort instigated by Sartine as part of his buildup of the French navy - significant in light of subsequent French assistance at the end of the American Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783). If Sartine had not pushed for French naval modernization and buildup, France would not have been in a position to aid the Continental cause. Continuing with that thread, French intervention in the American Revolutionary War was one of the principal factors that pushed the French monarchy into the financial crisis that precipitated the French Revolution (1789 - 1799). This is a scarce, fascinating map of the North Pole, produced by Emanuel Bowen in 1748. The map is a historical document of a contentious stage in the search for a Northwest Passage. A war of pamphlets and maps was then underway between British politician Arthur Dobbs (a fierce proponent of the existence of a northwest passage issuing from Hudson Bay) and the honorable - but hapless - Captain Christopher Middleton, whose survey of those coastlines proved that no such passage existed there. By showing such a passage and naming it Wager Strait rather than Wager Bay, this map places itself firmly in Dobbs' camp. (more details)
