This is a scarce 1852 Henry F. Walling wall map of Andover and North Andover, Massachusetts. Like most Walling town maps, the cartographer has taken great pains to identify the homes of individual families and landowners, as well as important roads, rail lines, municipal buildings, and businesses. Walling sold his maps by subscription, often going door to door, so the presence of individual property owners was doubtless intended as an enticement to buyers. Both Phillips Andover Academy and the Andover Theological Seminary are identified in the inset in the lower left. (more details)

In addition to its unusual color, this chart is significant for its inclusion of the ephemeral Globe Flag of New England (upper right corner). It also includes the flags of various trading companies, including the Dutch East India Company (VOC, Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie) and the Dutch West India Company (WIC, Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie). This is a c. 1950 map and with additional original c. 2004 artwork commemorating the French SAS (Special Air Service) operations in Brittany, France, in June 1944, both before and after the June 6, 1944, D-Day landings in Normandy. Bré, a French artist and historian, combined 3 Institut Géographique National maps, upon which he added his own artwork. The map directly references 3 of these SAS missions: Operation Dingson, Operation Cooney (also known as Operation Cooney Parties), and Operation Lost. (more details)

This is a rare proof state 1894 folding map of Tonkin by the Bureau Topographique des Troupes de l'Indo-chine. It was produced as the French were battling a simmering insurgency in Tonkin, and the extensive hand-drawn annotations present here suggest that it was updated to reflect changing realities on the ground. A seminal production, this is Guillaume Delisle's 1721 map of the Caspian Sea according to the surveys of Van Verden and S. I Soimonov. It is the first printed map of the Caspian Sea based upon actual survey work. Although other cartographers also copied the work of Van Verden and Soimonov, Delisle was the first, and his mapping is the finest and truest to the original manuscript. (more details)

This is a c. 1862 Confederate-printed map of the Western Theater of War during the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) created in New Orleans by Henry P. Lathrop. The Western Theater saw some of the war's most brutal fighting, and the Union's first major victories occurred in this theater. Confederate maps of any kind are exceedingly rare as most southern cities lacked supplies or a printing infrastructure capable of supporting map production. (more details)

A rare find, this is a 1945 XIV Corps newsprint pamphlet map of the Philippines and the Solomon Islands. The map focuses on the Southwest Pacific identifying Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and Bougainville in the Solomon Islands but not labeling New Guinea. A gauntleted fist emphasizes the XIV Corps' drive north from Guadalcanal through the Solomon Islands to Manila, which the corps liberated on February 24, 1945. This is a beautiful Nicolas Picart edition of the Hondius carte-á-figures map of Asia. It was composed by Jodocus Hondius as early as 1623 and first appeared in the 1630 Hondius atlas.
