This is a scarce 1906 photogravure Richard Rummell view of Princeton University. Overlooking campus from a point high above today's Rockefeller College and Nassau Street, Alexander Hall and the Maclean House appear immediately on the left. On the right, the first recognizable buildings are Blair and Buyers Halls and the Blair Arch. The old Halstead Observatory appears in front of Blair Hall, which is where Joline Hall stands today. Witherspoon Hall appears immediately behind the Blair Arch in this view. Edwards Hall is partially blocked by Witherspoon Hall and Edwards does the same thing to Dod Hall. Both Little Hall and the Dillon Gym appear to the right of Edwards and Dod, and Princeton's railroad station adorns the right border with several horse-drawn carriages waiting for passengers. Returning to Alexander Hall at the center, Stanhope Hall is blocked by trees and Nassau Hall with its iconic belfry. East Payne Hall and Chancellor Green, then Princeton's library, are to the left of Nassau Hall. Dodge Hall appears to the right of East Payne Hall and McCosh Hall is illustrated to the left and behind both Didge Hall and East Payne Hall. 1879 Hall is recognizable in the background on the left. The view is centered on Osborne Hall (now demolished and replaced with Bingham Hall) with its distinctive chapel-like façade. Chapel Street runs in front of the hall and Temple Street can be seen running northward towards East Rock. Many of the extant buildings of the historic Old Campus, including Connecticut Hall (1752), are easily recognizable. Welch Hall and Lawrance Hall stand alongside College street, across from the New Haven Green which is complete with the three chapels that still stand today: United Church on the Green (Congregational, 1814), Center Church (Congregational, 1812), and Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green (1816). This view appeared during a concerted period of updates, expansions, and renovations to the campus, many guided by the landscape design firm Olmsted Brothers, headed by Frederick Law Olmsted's sons, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. (1870 - 1957) and John Charles Olmsted (1852 - 1920). A scarce 1908 signed bird's-eye view of Brown University drawn by Richard Rummell. The view looks on the Brown campus from the southeast corner of the College Front Green. The Van Wickle Gates and University Hall, where the Office of the President is located, appears at center, with the College Main Green just behind. The neoclassical Manning Hall, housing the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, appears just to the left of University Hall. To the right is Slater Hall, a residential building constructed in 1879. The two buildings appearing prominently in the foreground were destroyed to make room for the John Hay Library (1910) and the John D. Rockefeller Library (1964). The Romanesque Sayles Hall (1881) is recognizable in the background, as is the octagonal Robinson Hall (1878). Prospect and George Street intersect at the bottom right. (more details)

This is a rare 1909 Richard Rummell view of Colby College, a private liberal arts school located in Waterville, Maine. The view illustrates the original campus, of which no buildings survive. The view centers on Memorial Hall, constructed in 1869 to memorialize the Colby men who died in the Civil War and the center of campus life. Prominently featured to the right of Memorial Hall, is Chemical Hall, the home of chemistry lectures and labs, the president's office, and a faculty meeting room. To the left is South College Hall, constructed in 1821, and the campus's first building in downtown Waterville. In the distance the distinctive dome of Shannon Observatory, built in 1889 to the specification of the distinguished physicist William Rogers, who Colby lured from Harvard. This is a 1910 Richard Rummell view of The Pennsylvania State University, popularly known as Penn State. Illustrating what was then the Pennsylvania State College from the southeast, Allen Street Mall bisects the view and, it should be noted, was still open to traffic at the time. The original Old Main is instantly recognizable just to the right of The Mall overlooking Old Main Lawn. Built in 1863, the original Old Main contained classrooms, laboratories, offices, a chapel, and rooms for 400 students. The building was deemed structurally unsound in the 1920s and razed in 1929. It was rebuilt in 1930, and the Old Main building that stands on campus today occupies the same piece of real estate where the original Old Main stood. Schwab Auditiorium is illustrated just behind and to the left of Old Main. Across The Mall from Old Main stands the Armory, which was originally constructed in 1892. This building housed the physical education facilities, as well as places for varsity athletics and other social events. It also served as the base of operations for the college's Cadet Corps, which was required of all male students until World War I. The Carnegie Building, built in 1904, stands behind the Armory and is currently occupied by Penn State's College of Communication and the Daily Collegian. Other buildings that still stand on campus today that are illustrated here include Old Botany, Ihlseng Cottage, and the McAllister Building. The large building in the foreground just to the left of center is Old Engineering, constructed in 1893 for the college's new engineering program. Unfortunately, the building caught fire and burned down in 1918 and Sackett Hall now stands in its place. (more details)

A most unusual and scarce c. 1915 Richard Rummell bird's-eye view of Amherst College, Massachusetts. Founded in 1821, Amherst College went through a lot of changes since this view was made. The view looks south on the college. The large avenue running through the image is Pleasant Street. The college observatory, the Octagon (1848) is evident near center. To the left of the Octagon is College Row, with the distinctive clock tower of Johnson Chapel (1827), flanked by North and South Colleges. The elaborate granite Walker Hall (1870), once called the 'Temple of Science' appears on the south side of Webster Circle, roughly where Robert Frost Library now stands. (more details)

The view illustrates the campus shortly after its 1914 move to Westhampton, while the new campus was still under construction - making it unique among Rummell views in that much of it is presumptive.
