This is an extremely scarce, influential, and often misunderstood map of North America published in 1765 by Samuel Engel. Engel composed this map to address and reconcile conflicting speculations regarding the American West and North Pacific - specifically the Buache-Delisle / Müller-Bering controversy. He compiled it from primary-source material, ranging from Lahonton's fictional expedition to the factual account of the American Indian voyager Moncacht-Apé. The latter led to Engel's mapping of the Columbia River - the first such map to do so based on actual observation. Although obscure today, Engel's work was well received when published. Thus, it provided source material for some of the most significant maps of the latter 18th century. (more details)

This is the rare 1965 Ballantine 'Wilderness' poster by Barbara Remington issued for the American release of the paperback edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The artwork was used as cover art for each of the three volumes, which, together, formed a triptych. The artwork was also issued, as here, in an enormous panoramic poster wherein all three images appear as one. Remington's work played a significant role in popularizing Tolkien's work worldwide. This is a rare c. 1913 Richard Rummell bird's-eye view of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The view looks northeast on Dartmouth from the intersection of Main Street and Wheellock. The Dartmouth Green with its distinctive path structure takes center stage. Dartmouth Hall (1906), with its iconic bell tower, appears at right. This is an August 1945 typewritten booklet by Lloyd V. Harmon and Charles T. Damp, two U.S. Army chaplains stationed on Tinian with the 303rd General Hospital. This is a 1935 British War Office edition of the Damascus sheet of the International Map of the World. The International Map of the World was a multi-national effort initiated in the early 20th century to create a uniform large-scale map of the world.
