The British War Office (1857 - 1964) was a department of the British Government responsible for the administration of the British Army until 1964, when its functions were transferred to the Ministry of Defense. In many ways, the War Office was the equivalent ti the Admiralty, which was responsible for the Royal Navy, and the Air Ministry, which oversaw the RAF. The War Office Was formed with the consolidation of the Secretary of War and the Secretary of the State of War, which happened around 1955.
