This is a fascinating 1844 Mitsukuri Shōgo double-hemisphere world map with descriptive text. Based on a somewhat earlier French map, it is important in the migration of Western geographic knowledge to Japan, even in the years before Japan was 'forced open' by American warships, hastening the end of its period of isolation. This eerie, beautiful hand-tinted 1869 Currier and Ives lithograph depicts an imaginary, romantic grotto. It is not a real-world location, but rather a theatrical image on a theme inspired by contemporary paintings and descriptions of actual European locales, such as Mark Twain's description of Capri's Blue Grotto in his Innocents Abroad, also published in 1869. Currier and Ives produced a number of such fantasy scenes, such as The Fairy Grotto in 1867. (more details)

This is a very scarce woodcut 1628 Münster/Petri view of Gdansk, Poland's primary seaport. It appeared in only one edition of Münster's Cosmographia and is one of the earliest acquirable views of the city. This is a rare 1575 François de Belleforest map of ancient Rome 'when she was in full flower.' The map is oriented to the southwest, and depicts the walled city set upon its famous hills. It names the principal gates to the city, and marks the location of the Coliseum, the Pantheon, the baths of Diocletian, Constantine, Antony, and Nero. This is a very scarce and enormous Meiji 9 or 1876 Japanese double hemisphere world map set by Hayami Iwakichi. Aside from its sheet immensity, the map is notable for reflecting changing Japanese understanding of world geography in the fallout from the Meiji Restoration. Hayami offers a very Japanese worldview superimposed upon a modern world map, with some places are diminished and others exaggerated in size to reflect not only their importance to Japan, but also Japan's perspective regarding its own position on the world stage.
