This is Sebastian Munster's 1540 map of Spain and Portugal, from the 1568 French edition of Munster's Cosmographia Universalis. It is among the earliest modern depictions of the Iberian Peninsula.A Closer LookThe map covers all of Spain and Portugal, extending from the African shores of the Strait of Gibraltar to the southwestern reaches of France across the Pyrenees Mountains. Throughout, the mountains and rivers of the region are shown pictorially, as are the many cities: among these are Lisbon, Cadiz, Madrid, Cartagena, and Barcelona; a portion of France beyond the Pyrenees is shown as well, with Montpellier noted among the cities there. The map is a somewhat simplified and clarified iteration of Waldseemüller's 1513 Tabula Moderna et Nova Hispanie; both of these maps are distinct from earlier printed maps of the Iberian Peninsula in that the toponymy - that is to say, the naming of places - is based here on contemporary knowledge rather than the work of the second-century geographer Claudius Ptolemy. Until 1513, the only printed maps of the region reflected the geographical knowledge of Imperial Rome: following the rediscovery of Ptolemy's work in the 15th century, geographers strove to update the maps with recognizable names for the cities, rivers, mountains, and kingdoms. This is an exceptionally rare c. 1844 raised relief map of France and Belgium, produced by the revolutionary German-born Parisian mapmaker Georg Michael Bauerkeller. These are two rare 1856 pre-Design Competition plans of Central Park drawn by the park project's first engineer-in-Chief Egbert Ludovicus Viele. Both plans extend from 59th street to 106th street, taking in the original grounds reserved for Central Park, as well as some of the adjacent streets and avenues. This is Girolamo Ruscelli's 1599 edition of the 1558 Carta Da Navegar De Nicolo et Antonio Zeni Furono In Tramontana Lano MCCCLXXX by Nicoló Zeno the Younger, revealing the alleged 14th-century voyages of his ancestors, Nicoló and Antonio Zeno. The fraud, seen largely as an attempt to co-opt the 1492 Columbia discovery of America, is responsible for the tenacious mapping of the apocryphal islands Frisland, Icaria, and Drogeo, and the coastline of Estotiland, which was taken to be the coast of Labrador. An extraordinary discovery, this is Phinehas Merrill's 1792 original manuscript draft of his important Plan of the Town of Stratham, published a year later in 1793. Not only is this the first map of any New Hampshire town, it is a key example of early American mapmaking, comparable in many ways to Christopher Colles' 1789 Roads. Moreover, while the printed map is in and of itself significant - and rare, existing in just 12 known examples - this unprecedented example is Merrill's own working draft, drawn by his own hand and exhibiting signs of an evolving production. A striking 1875 Reconstruction Era map of Chatham County, Georgia, illustrating in large the vicinity of Savannah. This map was published by Charles G. Platen, who incorporated local survey work, the 1818 John McKinnon map, and the meticulous work of the U.S. Coast Survey to compile this, the largest and most detailed map of the Savannah area ever issued. The intent behind the map, to develop agricultural lands, is evident in the color coding, with green referencing lowlands, swamps, and other wetlands, blue representing water, and yellow arable land. Platen advances the map considerably by drawing on the work of 36 local surveyors, all of whom are named, to add property lots and owners throughout. (more details)

This beautiful north polar projection map of the world, published in 1713 by Pieter van der Aa, is the most attractive depiction of a lost cartographic monument: Giovanni Domenico Cassini's eight-meter world map, which at one time adorned the floor of the Paris Observatory. That mammoth work can be considered the earliest scientific map of the world: it was the first to fix longitude based upon accurate astronomical observation.
