This is John Speed's 1676 map of Scotland, the first map of the kingdom published in an English atlas. It was included in Speed's The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, which was the first collection of maps of the counties of the British Isles. The map's engraving is the work of Jodocus Hondius, who engraved many of the plates of Speed's atlases. (The border figures are the work of an unknown engraver.) (more details)

A set of four nautical charts of the southern coast of Hainan Island, China, produced in 1819 by the French Dépôt générale de la Marine. At the time, France was eager to reestablish trade ties with China following the upheavals of the Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, and an accurate understanding of the coastline of Hainan was important to the safe passage of vessels along the coast. This is Jim Guimarin and Scott MacEwen's original manuscript artwork for their c. 1985 pictorial map of San Antonio, Texas. Depicting the city as it appeared in 1855, the map breaks down individual lots, labeling each with the landowner's name - evidence of the the mapmakers' meticulous scholarship. The Main Plaza, Military Plaza, and Alamo Plaza are highlighted in yellow. San Fernando Catholic Church, situated between the Military Plaza and the Main Plaza, is illustrated and labeled. The SS Resolute was scheduled to leave New York on January 12, 1935, and return 136 days later after visiting 29 countries and transiting the Panama Canal.
