This is a 1928 Chinese-issued Peiyang Press city plan or map of Tientsin (天津, Tianjin), China, at the start of the Nanjing Decade (1927 - 1937) of the Republican Era (1912 - 1949). This marked the last phase of the Treaty Port Era, which had predominated since the First Opium War (1839 - 1842), and was finally put to rest with the Second Sino-Japanese War/World War II. This is a unique 1843 Isaac H. Herbert original manuscript survey plat map of a portion of today's Brooklyn, New York, on the border of Williamsburg and Bushwick. This is Luggert van Anse's c. 1690 map of the English Channel, southeastern England, and the Pas-de-Calais. It was subsequently published by Renier and Josue Ottens in about 1730, whose imprint appears on this example. This is a superb work, combining granular inland detail with what had been state-of-the-art nautical charting of both the Channel and the mouth of the Thames River. This combination of detailed charting and inland mapping is unusual in maps of this period. (more details)

This is Michael (Mikhail) Getmanski's 1938 pictorial map of Moscow, prepared for the Soviet tourist agency, Intourist. Produced at the height of Stalin's Great Terror, it gives no hint of the turmoil underway, instead presenting the Soviet capital as a placid wonderland of beautiful gardens, wide boulevards, and monumental architecture. This is a rare 1821 C. F. Weiland map of the United States, including the ephemeral Mexican state of Texas. The map is graphically suggestive of either an independent Texas or a Texas as part of the United States, thus presaging the Texan Revolution, the borders claimed by the Republic of Texas, and the Mexican-American War. It illustrates Texas's brief period of semi-provincehood following Mexican Independence but before the 1824 ratification of the Mexican Constitution, which merged Texas with Coahuila. This is thus one of the first maps, if not the first, to present a modern, recognizable Texas. This is also one of the few maps to name the ephemeral Bonapartist colony of Champ d'Asile (Champ d'Asyle; 1818 - 1819), located in South Texas on the Trinity River. (more details)

An exceptionally well-executed 1832 French pen and ink schoolgirl map of Asia by Alexandrine Breaucousiu. Significantly, Breaucousiu drew the map from memory, which may account for the loose interpretation of geographical forms, but which at the same time exhibits a remarkable flair for geographic sketching (we tried this ourselves and could not produce a finer map). Moreover, individual countries and regions are filled with finely curving descriptive French script. (more details)

This is a scarce, monumental map of the South American highlands of Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The map was executed by the cartographer Victor Huot in 1905 based on extensive surveys performed by the 1903 - 1904 French Scientific Mission of Georges de Créqui-Montfort and anthropologist Eugene Sénéchal de la Grange. The Mission was multidisciplinary: in addition to its cartographic contributions, its members made forays into anthropology, linguistics, paleontology, and studies of the flora and fauna of the South American highlands. The survey was immediately hailed for the advances it represented in many fields. The map, in particular, was recognized as a foundational work: the Mission's surveys being the first scientific, firsthand mapping of the Andes. (more details)
