An exceptional c. 1885 chromolithograph bird's-eye view of the Nile River, extending from the Mediterranean Sea and Nile Delta to Khartoum at the confluence of the White and Blue Nile. Published in Milan by Antonio Vallardi, the map was produced to illustrate the British Nile Expedition (1884 - 1885) undertaken to relieve General Charles 'Chinese' Gordon during the Mahdist War (1881 - 1899). It moreover captures northeastern Africa at the height of Khedive Isma'il Pasha's (1830 - 1895) modernizing campaign and imperial ambitions. Isma'il leveraged Egypt's shared ambitions with the emergent Kingdom of Italy to harness Italian engineering, military, and commercial expertise, fueling popular Italian interest in Egypt and inspiring works such as this remarkable view. This is Hendrick Doncker's 1678 chart of the Canadian Arctic, Newfoundland, and Greenland. The map presents tantalizing potential routes points further west: the long-sought-after Northwest Passage. Though not the first in the lineage of Dutch nautical charts reaching back to van Loon's 1666 chart of these waters, this chart is among the rarest, seldom appearing in institutional collections and never in the modern map trade. According to Kershaw, this is among the first appearances of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. (more details)

This is a January 1942 Stanley Francis Turner Dated Events War Map of the Pacific and East Asia, published less than a month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Turner produced the 'Dated Events War Map' series throughout World War II (1939 - 1945), creating more than 25 maps, which, as a whole, present a comprehensive cartographic overview of war events as they unfolded. The present map is the Second Edition, the earliest 'Dated War Events' map we have encountered - we've never seen the first issue. (more details)

Possibly a singular survivor, this is a rare c. 1680 nautical map of the Atlantic Ocean by Hendrick Doncker. With its clear focus on the Atlantic and the shores facing it, it encompasses the Atlantic Triangle Trade, as it was at the end of the 17th century. We do not see it in surviving examples of Doncker's 1680, 1693, or 1697 sea atlases, and are forced to conclude that it was a separately issued chart. (more details)

This is Gotfred Jörgensen's rare 1895 wall map of British Columbia, the 3rd official map of the province and the best to appear in the 19th century. Jörgensen's map represents a significant advancement over earlier regional maps, offering both greater size and more up-to-date detail. This is an old color example of Jan Jansson's c. 1650 map and nautical chart of Novaya Zemlya in the Russian Far North, which appeared in the fifth volume of his Atlas Novus, also known as the 'Water World' atlas, the first true sea atlas. When this was issued, Novaya Zemlya was as hot in the European imagination as it was cold in fact.
